2022-23 Winter Season Guide - Everything you need
2022-23 Winter Season Guide
Everything you need for the winter season
We’ve put everything you need for the 2022-2023 winter season in Niseko all in one place. Our comprehensive list includes important info like transport, maps, lifts, dining and more.
We know there’s a lot of information available, so we’ve made it easier than ever to navigate your journey through Niseko.
1. Transport
Getting to Niseko
There are a number of ways to get to Niseko, but the most popular and easiest way is to catch a bus from New Chitose Airport to Niseko. There are a number of bus companies operating this route including Chuo Bus, White Liner, and The Hokkaido Resort Liner. We strongly recommend booking in advance to ensure you have a seat on the right bus.
There is also a train service that goes to Kutchan Station, as well as private taxi services. More info about how to get to Niseko can be found on our getting here page.
Local Transport
To get around Niseko, there are a number of shuttle buses available to guests. Taxi’s are also available, but are limited.
Hirafu Village Shuttle
A free shuttle will be running through the Hirafu Village taking transporting guests around the village and up to the Hirafu ski area. There will be three shuttle routes that will make continuous loops, with each loop taking approximately 20 and 30 minutes.
Niseko United Shuttle Bus
Niseko United will also be operating a shuttle bus between each of the four resorts with a number of additional stops along the way. This bus is free for holders of an All Mountain Pass. Those without an All Mountain Pass will be charged local bus fees (approximately 300 – 400 yen depending on the distance). Full info can be found on the Niseko United website.
Hanazono Shuttle Bus
Hanazono resort also runs a free shuttle throughout the winter season, with departures approximately every 20 minutes. The shuttle runs between Hirafu and Hanazono and is free. It runs from 8:00am – 7:28pm when night skiing is on, and 8:00am – 5:28pm when there is no night skiing.
Local Buses and Night Go Bus
To get to and from the local town of Kutchan, public buses and a special Night Go Bus will be operating this winter. Local buses go as far as Niseko Village, while the Night Go Bus goes to Hirafu (and a little further to “Kabayama”). The full timetable and routes can be found below. The timetable also includes train arrivals and departures.
2. Resort Map
The resort map is incredibly useful and is your guide to getting around Niseko. The resort village map includes most accommodations, shops, restaurants, facilities, and much more. Each building is shown on the map just as it looks in real life to make sure you’ll never get lost.
Maps can be downloaded online, or can be picked up at your accommodation provider. They can also be found at info centers around Niseko.
3. Trail Map
The Niseko trail map for the 2022-23 winter season can be downloaded directly from our website here. If you’d like a paper version to take with you on the mountain, you can pick one up from each resort base, at their ticket offices, or from your accommodation.
4. Lift Pass
There are many different options for lift passes in Niseko. Firstly, an All Mountain Pass will give access to all four interconnected resorts. All mountain pass holders can use of the Niseko United shuttle for free.
A Grand Hirafu or Hanazono pass will provide access to both of these ski areas on the one pass. Niseko Village pass will provide access to Niseko Village lifts only, and an Annupuri pass provides access to Annupuri only.
Prices for all passes vary, depending on the days and period you’ll be using your pass.
Where to buy a lift pass?
Lift passes can be purchased at ticket windows at the base of each resort. All mountain lift passes can also be purchased online. Grand Hirafu and Hanazono passes can also be purchased online. Online liftpasses allow you to skip lift pass counter queues and get on the slopes faster! You are able to collect your online liftpass from any of the four resorts!
At Annupuri, there is a lift ticket sales window directly under the Annupuri Gondola building. Similarly, lift passes at Niseko Village can be purchased under their gondola building as well. In Grand Hirafu, lift passes can be purchased at the Grand Hirafu Mountain Center next to their gondola, as well as at .Base (dot base) and the bottom of the Family Run.
Please note that you won’t be able buy All Mountain Season Pass online. You can purchase the All Mountain Season Pass at the counter at the each resort. Make sure to bring an ID when purchasing season passes. Passes cannot be purchased without an ID.
See each website for full lift pass prices.

6. Wine & Dine
The Wine & Dine is the BEST place to see every restaurant, shop and activity available in Niseko. This incredible resource makes it easier than ever to plan your dining experiences, as well as activities throughout your trip. Both publications are available online and in print. Printed versions can be found at your accommodation provider as well as info centers.
The Wine & Dine section lists all the best restaurants in an easy to understand way with prices, location, style, popular dishes and much more. The Wine & Dine is absolutely the best way to find the best restaurants, and to make the most of your trip.
The Area Guide has all the best activities, shops and more to complete your trip. If you’re looking for that wow-factor this trip, don’t miss our Area Guide.
7. Parking
If you’re using a hire car when visiting Niseko, it’s essential to understand the local parking regulations in and around the area. In Niseko there is zero ‘street’ parking. Parking on the street outside of designated parking lots is likely to result in a parking fine, your car being towed, or being completely buried in snow (which will destroy it). Before hiring a car there are a number of things to consider.
- Before hiring a car, we recommend confirming with your accommodation that there is adequate parking space available.
- Make sure you have some previous experience or training for driving on snow and ice. Driving on snow and ice without experience is incredibly dangerous. We recommend taking driver training in your home country before hiring a car in Niseko.
- Only park in designated parking lots at your accommodation, at each ski resort, as well as when visiting Kutchan Town or Niseko Town.
- Only hire a car from a reputable company. Reputable businesses will make sure the car has proper safety features such as good condition snow tires. Check out our rent-a-car directory for good places to rent a car.
Also note that the alcohol limit for driving in Japan is zero for all drivers.
Each of the four resorts has large parking lots, but as there are often many guests arriving by car, parking lots are known to become completely full. When parking at each resort, make sure to follow directions from parking attendants.
The welcome center in Hirafu is a busy parking area, and is also a drop off and pick up point for buses and accommodation operators. Please make sure to only park in the parking bays, and avoid the busy bus and shuttle bus lanes. Check out the diagram below for more info.
In Hirafu, parking is also available next to the gondola, as well as opposite the Aya hotel (next to the building known as Sun Sports Land). For detailed information, check out the full document provided by Kutchan Town here.
Shiguchi - Experience the extraordinary: A new generation of Japanese hospitality and culture
Experience the extraordinary: A new generation of Japanese hospitality and culture
Aisatsu 挨拶
Welcome to our new SHIGUCHI newsletter (previously the SEKKASTYLE newsletter).
A lot has happened over the last few years, and we hope this mail finds you all in good health and spirits.
We have been kept busy here in Niseko with constructing our kominka (traditional Japanese farmhouses) villas and are pleased to announce that we opened them back in May of this year.
As the snow starts falling on the mountaintops surrounding us, we begin to feel the excitement build as we anticipate another approaching winter full of the dry powder snow that Niseko is so famous for.
The added excitement this year comes with the recent opening of the Japanese borders, which means we will finally get to see your smiling faces again.
If you still need to book your stay, please get in touch, as we are sure you would enjoy relaxing in one of our private hot spring baths inside each of our five villas.
– Shouya & Shiguchi team
SHIGUCHI / シグチ
An unrivalled experience of a unique world of architecture, art and nature.
A blend of traditional design and contemporary comfort, our five villas offer peaceful, spacious accommodations with a private onsen and a terrace. Each villa has panoramic views over the valley and forest with no other buildings in sight.
SOMOZA / そもざ
Savour a splendid array of seasonal Hokkaido produce prepared by Chef Ozeki Tatsuya, whose culinary creativity places SHIGUCHI at the forefront of Niseko cuisine. SOMOZA sommelier Katsuyuki Sasaki’s encyclopedic knowledge of wine pairs with the cuisine, giving new insights into Hokkaido wines, craft beers and whiskies.
Shiguchi in-house guests enjoy complimentary breakfast and priority bookings for our ‘Hokkaido thru the ages’ experiential dinner course.
DISCOVERED / 発見
People, places and found objects that inspire us from our travels within Japan and around the world.
Tsujimura Shiro
One of the leading ceramic artists of Japan, Tsujimura’s art and approach are founded on the beauty and purity of the earth and its relationship and transformation with nature and fire. Tsujimura’s creative and artistic personality is anything but conventional. Inspired, in 1965, by a classic Ido tea bowl from the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, ancient Japanese and Korean techniques and traditions, and from his experience in the Zen temple of Sanshoji, Tsujimura’s work is based on a strict relationship with the past and his uncompromising individuality.
NIPPON / 日本
For every issue, we will introduce a word, object or ‘something’ from Japan that we find interesting and hopefully, you will too.
Wabi-Sabi
Probably one of the most defining of the Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, wabi-sabi, as writer Leonard Koren wrote in his book Wabi-Sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, “is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete; a beauty of things modest and humble; a beauty of things unconventional…”
Anyone who has visited any of Shouya’s projects in the past would see many examples of wabi-sabi as it is, without doubt, the underlying design aesthetic but, more importantly, the underlying philosophy behind what he creates.
Introducing a little wabi-sabi into our daily lives can help us navigate the modern-day struggles of striving for perfection.
SHASHIN / 写真
The beauty of Hokkaido as seen through the eyes of Shouya Grigg, Somoza and Shiguchi’s creative director and founder.
Shouya’s work is on permanent display in the Somoza and Shiguchi galleries and limited edition fine art washi prints are available for purchase.

HIS Niseko Santa Project 2022
Every child deserves joy.
This December 17, for the 8th Christmas in a row, HIS Niseko Santa Project will deliver packages of requested gifts to the child residents of local group homes based in Iwanai and Rankoshi. HIS Niseko’s friends, Rie Pickering and Ami Small began this project many years ago. We are proud to build upon their founding achievements.
HIS Niseko Santa Project exists solely to deliver joy to local children in need. We do this by providing holiday presents to children residing in group homes in Rankoshi and Iwanai. Through the thoughtfulness of our contributors and our volunteers, all donations go directly to support Santa Project.
As we do for every Christmas season, we again humbly request donations of money to buy:
- Toys
- Stationary
- Socks
- Gloves and towels
- Christmas cakes
We gently request a small donation of money so that HIS Niseko can order the above items via online purchase. HIS Niseko organizes student volunteers to tag each gift. Santa Claus then delivers the gifts and Christmas cake on December 18th.
When you donate, in the HIS Niseko Santa Project tradition, your donation makes a positive impact on the lives of local children in need.

Be prepared and snow-fit for your upcoming holiday!
Finally, the moment we have all been waiting for, the official opening of Japan’s borders for travelers, and just in time to make all the necessary arrangements for an awesome ski holiday in Japan. While securing your favorite accommodation and restaurants is likely at the top of your to-do list, it is also important to focus on getting physically prepared for the trip. It may well have been two seasons since you were last on the slopes and if you recall, having muscle soreness is common and may perhaps lead to you having more rests and even stopping for half a day or having that close call that almost/or did lead to an injury that impacted the rest of your trip.
Skiing and snowboarding are physically demanding and do require a good level of fitness to maximize your trip and help you stay injury free (even when the mishap is caused by someone else on the slopes). This is especially so if your lifestyle is mostly sedentary and you spend a lot of time sitting down.
Working out last minutely such as doing a few squats, lunges, and hamstring stretches is not really going to cut it in terms of being as prepared as you should be, and it can be difficult and confusing to find a safe and proper conditioning program online.
Winter sports conditioning requires more specialized exercises and preparation compared to what the typical person does such as running, cycling, and traditional strength training.
Here are some of the key areas to focus on:
Knee and Hip strengthening in multiple planes (directions)
To a greater extent than other forms of movement such as cycling and running, skiing and snowboarding load the joints in many different directions such as from the side and rotational forces, both of these types of loads predispose the body to fatigue and potential injury.
Suggested exercises: Lunges in multiple directions and incorporate elements of balance and endurance.
Spine Mobility and Strength
Maintaining good spine mobility and strength is often overlooked in conditioning programs. It helps you to maintain better posture and alignment and assists in making better turns for both skiing and snowboarding. Having a stiff spine can put more strain on the neck, shoulders, hips, and knees both while doing the activity as well as when you fall over.
Suggested exercises: Spine extension and rotation exercises, start by lying down and then progress to an upright or standing alignment.
Balance and Muscular Endurance
We often find ourselves pushing our physical capacity on the slopes much more than what we would normally “choose” to do, because it is so much fun! This also places a lot more load on our body fatiguing us quicker and again predisposing our joints to more load and possible injury.
Suggested exercises: Slightly faster dynamic exercises that may involve elements of jumping and balance challenge. Note: these exercises should be introduced with care (especially if you have a history of joint or back injury) and after you have done some more basic strength and conditioning training (2-3 weeks into your conditioning program).
Conditioning muscles and joints take time and consistency, so you need to be starting at least 5-6 weeks before your trip, so there is time for your body to adapt to get stronger and more mobile. Ideally 5-6 weeks out from your holiday you want to be starting with 20 minutes of specific conditioning, 2-3 times per week, gradually building the intensity of the exercises, until the last few weeks where you be progressing to doing the exercises at least 4-5 times per week. You will be grateful for this preparation when you feel your increased endurance on your holiday, and in the event, you do have a mishap and fall on the slope when you do the self “body scan” to make sure you have no injuries!
To help get you started, click this link to a free conditioning class that is only about 25 minutes of exercise. The class is part of a complete five-week program that gradually progresses in challenge to get you ski-ready!
