Message from NPB Representative Directors

I would like to thank everyone for their support of the Niseko Promotion Board over the last year. I feel that we have achieved a great deal, though still have a fair distance to go. After a very successful ski season, the interest in Niseko is as high as ever. All ski areas are moving forward with their resort development. New hotels, ski lifts and after ski infrastructure of restaurants, shopping and of course bars. There also has been an increased effort to raise the profile of summer activities available. With treetop adventure parks, mountain bike trails, zippiness adding to the rafting and cycling that we are already famous for. With all these new ingredients, it is now, that we need to push the Niseko brand as an all year round resort and try and fill in the customer gaps in our calendar year. The Niseko tourism industry has also led to economic and social benefits to our local towns. Towns with good job prospects, good education and a great lifestyle our essential to attract new staff. So as we move ahead, the Niseko Promotion Board and our members should also keep a sense of community and lend support to areas outside of those that directly affect us. Finally, I feel that the future is looking very exciting for Niseko. I am looking forward to working with everyone over the next year to realize the Niseko Dream.

Mr. ROSS FINDLAY

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to all members of the community for their help and understanding in Niseko Promotion Board's activities. Shinkansen, highway, rise in land price, and G20 Tourism Minister's meeting. These are just a few examples of positive changes that will be brought to this area in the near future. With these changes happening, I feel that this area is catching attention from all over the world. When changes take place, we NPB also needs to rethink what it is the NPB can do for the community, how NPB can benefit it's members and the community. For the Niseko area to further evolve as a year-round resort, NPB holds a responsible and important role. We will continue improving our skills and professionalism to enhance development of the area.

Discussions on convenience improvement of stations proceed towards the Shinkansen line extension to Sapporo

Heading towards a scheduled extension of the Hokkaido Shinkansen line to Sapporo in the end of FY2030, Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency, which oversees construction of train stations, and the Hokkaido government jointly started to set up councils in relevant regions to collect local needs to improve convenience of the stations. The councils are to consolidate opinions from commercial and industrial businesses around Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station (Hokuto, Hokkaido), which opened in March 2016, and four other stations, which are planned to be constructed, including Shin-Yakumo (Yakumo), Oshamanbe (Oshamanbe), Kutchan (Kutchan), and Shin-Otaru (Otaru). They will also discuss the usage of the space underneath the elevated railway tracks such as the operation of a parking lot, installation of chargeable waiting rooms, and services for international tourists.

According to the Hokkaido government, flaws of the facility including narrow passages on the platform and the congestion in the station upon arrival of outbound lines have been pointed out by many users at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station.

NPB Annual General Meeting for FY2017

All 6 new directors were approved and will join the team!

The NPB Annual General Meeting for FY2017 took place on Thursday, 31 May, from 10am at the Hotel Niseko Alpen. A majority of members (130 including proxies) were present. The meeting agenda included the report of FY 2017 activities and audits, FY 2018 activity plan and budget, and appointment of directors.

All items on the agenda was approved by members. The NPB team is very excited to continue promoting the Niseko area along with our directors and members. The Representative Directors will be Mr. Ross Findlay and Mr. Yoshinao Kamae. The Executive Director will be Mr. Yoshihito Tanaka. Please click here to see who the 6 new directors are. Here is a great speech given by Kristian Lund from Niseko Media K.K. during the meeting:

Hi everyone,

I'm honoured to have been invited here today with the opportunity to join the board of the NPB. I'm confident that together we can guide not just our tourism promotion, but ensure a better future for the entire Niseko area.

Niseko is riding a wave of success and popularity at the moment. But as we all know, sometimes the good times don't last forever. After the ski boom of the 1980s, very few ski resorts across Japan have recovered to their former glory. Fortunately for us, Niseko has recovered and is now leading the way in the revitalisation of Japan's ski tourism industry.

The benefits of this to the local people can be seen everywhere you look – we've got cash flowing into the local economy, and off the back of that, growing population, employment and business opportunities. Essentially the quality of life for local residents is improving unlike many other towns across Hokkaido. However, we all know there have been speed bumps that have greatly affected tourism over the past decade.

The Kutchan/Niseko community is now dependent on the tourism economy, so the NPB and other tourism organisations have a very important job - our families and fellow citizens are relying on these organisations to plan for the future.

So that's why I'm here today – I'm passionate about Niseko and its future. Until recently I considered Niseko my second home. Now it's just my home.

I'm really excited for the opportunity to work with the NPB to help plan for the future for all of us here and everyone living in the area.
