Thank you all for your continued support of the Niseko Shootout!
We would like to share an announcement about our end of season finale event, the Niseko Shootout Short Film Festival.
Due to the circumstances posed by the recent Corona Virus outbreak, we will unfortunately not be holding our event at Hanazono Edge as previously planned. However, our communities loss is the world’s gain as we plan to broadcast all films and live judging results during a Facebook Watch Party!
Now everyone far and wide can join in as host Neil Hartmann guides us through viewing of this year’s Short Film entries - all 22 of them! The winners will be announced along with this year’s hashtag #nisekoshootout winners.
We are thrilled that all filmmakers and hashtag entrants that would otherwise be unable to attend our local event, will now be able to take part in the event they so very much made! Undoubtedly, the films and photos will do their part in showcasing winter in Niseko. Now let’s do our part in showcasing Niseko’s resiliency by helping us spread the word about our online event.

To Prevent Outbreak of Coronavirus in Town
From Kutchan Town to the Niseko community
On 7 April 2020, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency in a number of prefectures.
Hokkaido Prefecture Government has announced "Concentrated Countermeasures" to help reduce the risk of infection. Read the Governors announcement HERE.
Due to the current COVID-19 (also known as Coronavirus) issue across the world, we recommend that you keep yourself updated HERE with the latest advice on how to protect yourself and the community by doing the most you can.
Also, by frequently checking Kutchan Town Official Website you can get the most updated information on any current cases and information to take note of while in Niseko.
Kutchan Town recommends the following precautions to help keep the Niseko community safe;
How to protect yourself
- Use "cough etiquette" at all times
- Avoid the "three-c's": closed spaces, crowded places, close-contact settings
- Get proper information government websites
- Wash hands for more than 30 seconds especially before eating and after coming back home from outside
- Avoid human contact (public places like buses and trains). When going out wear a mask
- Keep yourself healthy by eating well and getting enough hours of sleep

"SNOW MIKU" is the character who enlivens the wintery Hokkaido. The design is based on "a pure white snow sculpture of 'Hatsune Miku,'" that was created for "Sapporo Snow Festival 2010." Since then, a "SNOW MIKU" festival using "SNOW MIKU" as a main character has been held in Hokkaido every year. The costume design for "SNOW MIKU" is selected in an online competition on different themes every year, and the theme of the 2020 competition is a "Music instrument evocative of Hokkaido snow." "SNOW MIKU" will liven up Hokkaido this winter, together with all of you creators, as it has done for several years!

Launched in 2018, The Best of Niseko Awards are designed to give our Niseko visitors the opportunity to recognise their favourite Niseko spots by voting for them.
We have created a shortlist of Niseko favourites which were chosen by a local committee of 10 foodies, restaurateurs, business managers and owners. Details of committee are in issue #43 of Whats On Niseko. Voting is now open and will run until 29 February, 2020.
The winners will be announced in Whats On Niseko and we will be hosting an awards evening scheduled for early March, details of which will be announced later.
