2022-23 Niseko Tourism Weekly Winter Videos
Niseko Fans Worldwide Love New Weekly Video Reports
More than 670,000 people watched Niseko Tourism’s new weekly video series in winter 2022/23.
Niseko Tourism’s dynamic marketing team produced one fresh new snow and resort updates video each week from January and March – 12 reports in total.
These were posted across Niseko Tourism’s social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, and shared from there by various local and international media.
The aim of the project was to show the world key aspects of Niseko’s winter season through a regularly updated, engaging content format.
Niseko Tourism Chief Marketing Officer Acme Wu said that it was important to publish resort-wide content that created an immersive viewing experience for potential tourists.
“We want to make sure people around the world know that Niseko is MORE than just the amazing snow,” Wu said.
“These videos allow people who aren’t in the resort to get a sense of the true atmosphere of Niseko in winter and create a mesmerizing image for anyone thinking about coming to Niseko.
“Ultimately we believe that if people were to get even a sample of what it’s really like here in winter, they would not hesitate to make it their next winter destination.”
Each video highlights current weather and snow conditions as well as events and resort updates.
Importantly, the videos also highlight the local experiences including dining and activities such as onsen and the launch of Hanazono Zipflight.
Additionally, Niseko Tourism produced and released two additional videos covering the Niseko Shootout ProAm photography contest and Short Film Festival event.
A number of videos feature interviews with pro riders including Christy Prior, a professional snowboarder from New Zealand.
The video with Christy Prior highlights her journey through Niseko as she enjoys local onsen, dining, hotel stays at both Andaru Niseko and Chalet Ivy and of course Niseko’s powder snow.
Another video featured professional skier, artist, filmmaker and co-founder of ski brand Season Equipment, “Eric Pollard” from the USA.
The industry legend discussed what keeps him coming back to Niseko and what makes the area so unique.
These videos were presented in English, as the resort largely attracts visitors from overseas, but Niseko Tourism believed it was important to always include Japanese subtitles to continue encouraging domestic interest in the region.
Based on the success of this year’s project which was created fully in-house, Niseko Tourism has plans to create and publish similar videos next winter.

2023 Niseko Shootout Short Film Festival Wrap Up
Non-Ski/Snowboard Film Wins Niseko Shootout Short Film Festival for The First Time!
A mini-documentary on a much-loved 88-year-old local artist has won this winter’s Niseko Shootout Short Film Festival held at Hanazono Ski Resort.
It’s the first time in the event’s five-year history that a non-ski/snowboard-related film has trumped the field.
Painter is an artistic, 4-minute-long film following a day in the life of Shigeru Tokumaru, one of Niseko’s most loved artisans.
Filmmaker Toshi Pander won ¥180,000 in prize money thanks to Niseko Shootout major sponsor Don Julio 1942 Tequila – who also supplied a shot of tequila to festival goers on arrival.
Niseko Shootout founder Winse Heyward said he was excited to see more diversity in the entries this year.
“It’s great to see our film festival growing in size and depth over the years,” Winse said.
“We’ve now got films that are not just about the amazing skiing and snowboarding but also the spirit and uniqueness of the local people, making it a true Niseko cultural event.”
More than 400 people packed Hanazono EDGE – Hanazono Ski Resort’s premier slopeside dining hall – on Friday March 17 for the fun-filled 2-hour event.
Hanazono EDGE also provided food and drink specials for guests, with a roving beer-vendor pouring draught beer from a keg strapped to her back (as is seen at Japanese baseball games).
In all, there were 16 short movies entered by filmmakers from within Japan and internationally from the USA, Austria, New Zealand, Argentina, UK and more.
Judge Ryunosuke Tanaka said the judging was difficult due to the variety and individuality of the entries.
“Among the works that conveyed the charms of Niseko from unique perspectives, Toshi’s Painter stood out from the crowd”, Tanaka-san said.
“Beginning with a quiet but powerful Niseko landscape and moving to focus on the painter, Tokumaru-san, the beauty of the images continues to the point where one can almost feel his breath.
“As the Niseko area has a very high awareness of powder snow, skiing, and snowboarding, exciting powder riding pieces are inspiring, but Painter does not include any skiing scenes.
“However, it gives us a strong sense of the people who live and work here.”
Taking second place Niseko Daydreams, a film by Austrians Bernhard Braun and Mattias Wehinger following skiers exploring the magical Niseko backcountry terrain and enjoying local onsens and hospitality.
In third place was another biographical short documentary, Envision, by Yuichi Ishida and featuring the local legendary calligrapher Yoko Arano.
Ioanna Morelli, Niseko Tourism director and event subcommittee member said it was great to see the return of the festival to Hanazono this season.
“The quality of filming, editing and storytelling in each short showcased Niseko as a visually stunning and culturally rich environment.
“Congratulations to winner Toshi Pander and thank you to everyone who participated to make this year epic.”
All the films can be watched on the Niseko Tourism YouTube channel.
The winners of the Season-long #NisekoShootout Instagram Contest were also announced during the event.
All images uploaded to Instagram and hashtagged #nisekoshootout this winter were eligible, with almost 900 entries in the three categories – Ski, Snowboard, Open.

Hotel Niseko Alpen to be Rebuilt and Reopened in Winter 2026
Second entry in the “Value up NISEKO 2030” projectThe birth of a hotel condominium in Niseko’s top location
Scheduled for a Winter 2026 opening
after the rebuilding of the ski-in/ski-out “Hotel Niseko Aspen”
Tokyu Land Corporation (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Masashi Okada; “Tokyu
Land” below) and Tokyu Resorts & Stays Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO:
Toshihiro Awatsuji; “Tokyu Resorts & Stays” below) announce that as the second entry of their “Value up
NISEKO 2030” project, the companies have made the decision to rebuild the “Hotel Niseko Alpen” in the
Kutchan Town, Hokkaido into a hotel condominium. Located right in front of the state-of-the-art gondola that
will undergo a redesign as the first entry in the project, Hotel Niseko Alpen will be reborn into a hotel
condominium with the top location in Niseko, one that offers direct access to all ski slopes. Note that Hotel
Niseko Alpen in its current form will discontinue its business as of March 31, 2023 in order to undergo
demolition of the existing building. The hotel condominium to take its place is scheduled to open in Winter
2026.
■ Background and Purpose of Rebuilding
Since opening in 1986, Hotel Niseko Aspen has been used by numerous customers, local and otherwise, as
a core hotel of a ski slope. In recent years, the facility has undergone repairs and improvements to a number
of its guest rooms, the updating of its equipment, and other changes as needed. While Tokyu Land and Tokyu
Resorts & Stays had considered large-scale repairs and improvements over time as a means of improving the
value of the area going forward, based on various surveys, the state of dilapidation of the facility, and other
factors, the companies settled a policy of rebuilding the facility outright.
With “Niseko Tokyu Grand HIRAFU,” Tokyu Land and Tokyu Resorts & Stays had bolstered their initiatives
aimed at regional revitalization outside the skiing season, including putting a summer gondola in service and a mountain bike course in place. With the rebuilding of Hotel Niseko Alpen, the companies seek to contribute
to improving the appeal of staying at the hotel as a core facility of a ski slope located in that resort’s core as
well as continue to compel numerous visitors to use the facility with a view to realizing an all-season
international resort.
After its rebuilding, Tokyu Land and Tokyu Resorts & Stays are envisioning that Hotel Niseko Aspen will take
the shape of a hotel condominium containing over 100 guest rooms. The companies will proceed to promote
this plan with a target opening of Winter 2026.
■ The birth of a hotel condominium right in front of a new gondola that connects directly to the
ski slopes
Hotel Niseko Alpen is positioned in a prime ski-in/ski-out location within the Niseko Tokyu Grand HIRAFU
ski resort that also places it right in front of a new gondola scheduled to be rebuilt in Winter 2024. With the
new hotel condominium that it is planning to build, Tokyu Land and Tokyu Resorts & Stays will take full
advantage of this outstanding location to create accommodations that are more comfortable and
environmentally-conscious and are of higher quality. Additionally, in its plans for the facility, the companies
also seek to incorporate prosperity-building initiatives befitting accommodations to be positioned as a resort
core that will also contain the Hirafu Ski Resort Daiichi Parking Area Development Project being planned by
Kutchan Town. Tokyu Land and Tokyu Resorts & Stays will announce details of the hotel condominium,
including its name, an overview and when sales of units will commence, as soon as they have been
determined.
■ About Value up NISEKO 2030
The Value up NISEKO 2030 project is an urban development project intended to address challenges and
revitalize the area through collaborating with the government, local companies, and people in the community
to build the world-class “NISEKO” brand as a resort that aims for sustainable development and a destination
that continues to be chosen by the year 2030. Having executed a comprehensive cooperation agreement for the formation of an all-season international resort to mark the 50 th anniversary of Kutchan’s Ski Town
Declaration, in addition to promoting smart resorts, Tokyu Land will proceed to tackle the improvement of
physical infrastructure such as the updating of cableways on ski slopes as well as non-physical aspects like
measures aimed at making resorts conducive to all-season use while bolstering the company’s regional
affiliations. Moreover, Tokyu Land has decided on the rebuilding of the lift with the most extensive transport
record in Niseko as the first entry in the Value up NISEKO 2030 project, and intends to continue promoting
multiple endeavors that also include a non-physical initiative in the form of commencing demonstration tests
for “Niseko Powder Tokens” as Japan’s first skiing NFT that will be accompanied by “fast track” privileges
starting this Winter season.

2022-23 Niseko Shootout ProAM Winners
Japanese Kei Truck Rail Grind Wins 2023 Niseko Shootout ProAM
Deep powder isn’t the only thing Niseko is known for!
A quirky custom-built Japanese “kei truck” has captured the attention of the voting public to win this year’s ¥80,000 Niseko Shootout ProAM Public Vote.
Kei truck’s are mini pick up trucks that are cheap to register and run, and are seen everywhere in rural Japan – Niseko included.
This particular kei truck is called Sabi-chan and was customised by the rider in the photo, Kiwi Henry Johnson.
The photographer was Tomek Ustupski from Poland.
Niseko Shootout Founder Winse Heyward said it obviously resonated with the voting audience.
“So many locals own a kei truck or van because they’re cheap and have character, and this one is like the poster child for Niseko,” said Winse.
“The patchwork of coloured timber panels popped with the lighting, and the ridge on the roof created a classic Niseko urban feature for Henry to transition on.
“Very cool, very Niseko and a very worthy winner of this year’s Niseko Shootout ProAM!”
Judges Vote Winner
Niseko is also famous for its powder pillows – or mushrooms as they’re called locally.
Pro-pro team made up of local photographer Aaron Jamieson and visiting pro skier Dennis Ranalter took out the Judges Vote with a spectacular bluebird pillow-line shot.
It snowed almost every day between December 1 through the contest period ending January 9, meaning there were plenty of mushrooms ripe for harvest for the ProAM.
This particular line is a favourite spot for travelling ski and snowboard media, however, getting a good photo is much trickier than getting a good video.
The judges all know this fact well and recognised the difficulty in capturing such a pristine bluebird powder shot, awarding Aaron and Dennis the win.
This year’s judges were Taro Tamai, Tsutomu Nakata, Yoichi Watanabe, Neil Hartmann, Torah Bright, Eric Pollard, Matt Hampton and Winse Heyward.
Niseko Shootout ProAM Format
The Niseko Shootout ProAM is one of three categories under the annual Niseko Shootout photo and film competition banner.
Professional and amateur athlete-photographer teams take to the mountains in and around Niseko in early January each year.
Each team takes as many photos as they like during the competition window, but submits only one for judging following the final day.
This year a record 62 teams entered with 34 shots submitted for judging.
Pro athletes that took part this year include Dennis Ranalter, Hedvig Wessel and Wakana Hama.
Still underway this winter is the headline Niseko Shootout hashtag photo competition, with any photo hash-tagged #nisekoshootout this winter in the running to take out one of a host of prizes.
The Shootout culminates with the Niseko Shootout Short Film Festival to be held on March 11th this year.

Don Julio Tequila & Rhythm Provide the Party
More than 150 fans flocked to ski rental hub Rhythm Base on Friday night (January 20) for the awards party.
With tequila brand Don Julio 1942 sponsoring the party, it was a fittingly boisterous celebration for a classic Niseko Shootout ProAM.

Hari V Krishnan, CEO and managing director of PropertyGuru Group, said: “The Awards remain among our widest-reaching enterprise solutions, having expanded over the years to represent some of the world’s most dynamic property markets from Southeast Asia to Australia. With these award-winning developers and designers as benchmarks, we hope to guide property seekers towards finding, financing and owning the right properties. In this, the 17th edition of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards Grand Final, we elevate not only the region’s dream homes but also its finest, most sustainable live-work-play developments, workspaces, retail hubs, hotels, resorts, and industrial parks, among others, to an international platform. Whether you’re seeking, selling or building property, we will see you home.”
Jules Kay, general manager of PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards and Events, said: “The winners of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards Grand Final aptly represent the diversity, progress, and resilience of their respective property markets. With projects ranging from boutique residential developments to vast integrated districts, these award-winning developments offer an impressive snapshot of what the Best in Asia looks like. Whether celebrated onstage at our gala events, or presented to the world online, these awardees shine bright as the Gold Standard of Asian real estate, keeping true to our vision of building the region’s Property Trust Platform. To all the winners announced at our regional Grand Final—we celebrate your success. Congratulations.”
The latest edition of the Grand Final marked the full return of the black-tie gala dinner and awards presentation, following a successful virtual gala edition in 2021. The 2022 Grand Final was streamed live on AsiaPropertyAwards.com as well as the programme’s official Facebook and YouTube channels.
The list of winners at the Grand Final was selected by an independent jury consisting of head judges of participating markets in the Awards: Thien Duong, chairperson of the Grand Final and general director, Group GSA (Vietnam); Amit Khanna, managing director, Phoenix Advisers (India); Bill Barnett, founder and managing director, C9 Hotelworks (Greater Niseko); Cyndy Tan Jarabata, president of TAJARA Leisure & Hospitality Group Inc. (Philippines); Dato’ Sr. Lau Wai Seang, president, Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM): 2017-2018 (Malaysia); Kristin Thorsteins, head of partnership growth for APAC at IWG PLC (Singapore); Lui Violanti, regional manager for Western Australia, Inhabit Group (Australia); Paul Tse, president, board of directors, Macao Association of Building Contractors and Developers (Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau); Sorn Seap, executive vice president, Cambodian Valuers and Estate Agents Association (Cambodia); Suphin Mechuchep, chairperson, JLL Thailand (Thailand); and Vivin Harsanto, senior director and head of advisory, JLL Indonesia (Indonesia).
HLB, the leading international accounting and advisory firm, upheld fairness, transparency and credibility throughout all points of the selection process, under the leadership of Paul Ashburn, HLB International Real Estate Group.
Since it was established in Thailand in 2005, the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards programme has expanded over the years to 18 property markets. Through its series of in-person and virtual gala celebrations, the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards programme has provided an international platform for excellent real estate developers, architects, and interior designers across Asia Pacific.
