Giant 10m x 10m Snow Screen Illuminates Niseko Shootout Drive-in Short Film Festival

Short Film Festival

The 2022 Niseko Shootout Short Film Festival was held for the second time as a drive-in cinema for social distance and beamed online around the world.

The fourth annual Niseko Shootout Short Film Festival was projected on a 10m x 10m screen made of snow by local volunteers and was also broadcast internationally via YouTube Live on Saturday night, March 12th, 2022.

In all, there were 13 films entered by filmmakers from all over the world including USA, Australia, Finland, France, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and more.

The fun-filled 2hr show hosted by Niseko Tourism Director John Barton and DMO Assistant Lily Vivas.

This year, due to lower COVID risks, the event was opened to more guests. About 40 cars were able to RSVP in advance and more participants come to enjoy this experience as walk-ins.

Local food vendors Hakko Ginger, Tsubara Tsubara and Graubuden also joined this year – enhancing the festival vibe and serving local snacks and drinks.

This year more than 344 live viewers joined the event online during the night and over 738 people have watched the show on Youtube since it aired.

The Niseko Shootout has been officially partnered with the Mountain Film Awards at Tigne, Verbier and Morzine since 2020.

The winners and a few special films will be handpicked by Mountain Film Awards organizers and will be showcased on their website.
This year’s winning film was “SAMURAI: 2021winter Hokkaido Odyssey”, a 5-minute film produced by Double-o-design, showcasing the year-round Hokkaido landscape through a Samurai’s adventure.

Taking second place was “Day Dream” by Toshi Pander, and in third place was “Hokuseifu” by Nolan Yoshiaki Isozaki.

The live show and all the films can be watched on the Niseko Tourism YouTube channel.

The Niseko Shootout Photography competition winners were also announced during the live event. The contest is a season-long photography competition with entries made via the hashtag #nisekoshootout on Instagram. This winter there were over 700 photo entries in the three categories – Ski, Snowboard, Open.
